BLACK SEA OF TREES is a progressive metal band from Melbourne, Australia, formed in 2018. The band is known for creating concept-driven albums that explore spirituality, folklore, and philosophy through long-form composition and immersive atmosphere.

Their music blends progressive metal with elements of death metal, folk, and ambient sound design. Songs move fluidly between dense walls of distortion, expansive melodic passages, and stripped-back acoustic moments. Clean vocals, falsetto, and deep growls are used as narrative tools rather than stylistic contrast, shifting alongside the emotional and thematic needs of each story.

BLACK SEA OF TREES approach songwriting as world-building. Each album is written as a self-contained narrative with its own sonic identity, allowing the band to evolve stylistically while retaining core elements of dynamics, weight, and melody. Changes in tempo, texture, and tone are central to their compositions, reflecting internal conflict, transformation, and collapse within the stories they tell.

The band released their debut album The Spiritual Beast independently in 2023. Their second album, Cult of the Sun, continues their focus on cohesive storytelling, expanding into desert soundscapes and ancient spiritual themes while maintaining a deliberate, emotionally driven approach to progressive metal.
